The installation instructions for this cooktop give a minimum, a recommended and a maximum countertop cutout. The spec sheet gives one figure, which matches the maximum.

Two documents, two widths
The spec sheet lists the product as 36" wide. The installation instructions show 36 1/4" and 21" (dimensions B and A in its drawing) for KCGS556ESS and KCGS956ESS. The spec sheet's cutout, 35 5/8" x 20", is the maximum in the installation table, not the recommended size. Use the installation instructions packed with your cooktop as the final word.
